Running a logistics company is always about managing risks and stress

Konstantin Grinevich, Managing Partner of Glogos Project, shares his insights in an interview with Kommersant:

1. Growth prospects and the company’s current flagship projects;
2.Navigating sanctions and the new economic reality;

3.Leveraging Artificial Intelligence to optimize project cargo logistics;

4.The ongoing transformation of the global and Russian logistics market: key trends and opportunities.

"When I started the business, I knew I wanted to stay ahead of the curve. That is why we never focused on owning specific assets or production facilities. Instead, we placed the client’s needs at the core of our strategy — and once we understood those needs, we aligned the right resources and assets to deliver."

Artificial Intelligence will process electronic applications for special permits to transport oversized cargo

What awaits the “oversize cargo sector” in 2024

Starting March 1, 2024, a new decree of the Government of the Russian Federation sets a three-hour limit for processing electronic applications submitted through the federal state system for obtaining special permits for oversized cargo transportation.
The applications will be processed automatically by AI, provided that all required fields are completed and all regulatory requirements are met (including confirmation of the events outlined in Article 21, Clause 31 of Federal Law No. 257-FZ “On Public Roads and Road Activities in the Russian Federation”).

Freight rates show traditional seasonal growth

Market overview, Week 48 of 2023

Handysize rates:

Stronger trade activity in the Atlantic, driven by robust demand for grain and raw material shipments from the Gulf of Mexico, has supported rate growth. This demand, combined with longer waiting times in the Panama Canal, led to an increase in spot rates from US ports by $3,000–$4,000 per day per vessel on time charter and $3–4 per ton.
The main driver of this rise on the US East Coast and in Central America has been a significant shortage of tonnage.

Freight rates: Long-awaited balance found on certain routes

Market overview, Week 1 of November 2023

Supramax charter rates:

Supramax charter rates continue to show fluctuating trends across different regions. The average rate in the Pacific RV region stands at $8,375/day, while in the Atlantic region rates are higher — around $17,336/day. The highest demand is observed on the Continent/FE route, with rates reaching up to $20,667/day.

Freight rates on key import and export routes remain high

Market overview, Week 3 of October 2023

Major deep-sea tonnage groups are still considered at relatively high levels. In the third week of October, daily rates for Handy, Supra, Ultra, and Panamax segments increased by nearly 40% compared to the end of summer 2023. Supramax from the Black Sea to FEAST is fixed at around $24,500/day.

Freight rate growth on key deep-sea routes continues

Market overview, Week 2 of October 2023

Major deep-sea tonnage groups are still considered at relatively high levels. In the second week of October, daily rates for Handy, Supra, Ultra, and Panamax segments remain almost twice as high as at the end of summer 2023. Ultramax is quoted at around $15,000/day (CHINA – NOPAC).

Trade slowdown amid rising freight rates and new restrictions

Market overview, Week 1 of October 2023

The Azov–Black Sea coaster market in the first week of October was in the low-to-mid 50s range (basis Rostov–Marmara). Business activity in the region sharply slowed due to the introduction of new export duties (effective from October 1, 2023) on additional product groups such as peas, chickpeas, and coriander. A large share of importers simply were not ready to recalculate contracts and make purchases.

Freight rates remain high at the start of the season

Market overview, Week 4 of September 2023

In the Azov–Black Sea coaster segment, rates rolled back slightly from the mid-60s to the low-60s range (basis Rostov–Marmara). Charterers’ willingness to fix a deal is influenced not only by the high rate, which some shipowners are still trying to push, but also by the increase in export duties on certain commodities. For example, starting October 4, 2023, exports of certain goods will be subject to a 7% duty.

Freight rates increase on key export and import routes

Market overview, Week 3 of September 2023

In the Azov–Black Sea coaster segment, the market nearly came to a standstill in the third week of September: both shipowners and charterers are taking a wait-and-see approach, while the number of shipments is decreasing. Freight rates have been dropping from the high $70s down to…

International Business Dialogue “Russia–China”: Trends in the Freight Market

Konstantin Grinevich, Managing Partner of Glogos Project, shared insights on the current situation in the “Southeast Asia – Russia” direction:

Freight rates rising amid tonnage shortage

 -119 river-sea cargo vessels are expected to be built in 2024–2028 (according to GTLK).
-Every year, at least twice as many vessels are written off and withdrawn from service.

If the market continues to experience such imbalance, freight rates will keep rising. Business activity and trade volumes are highly likely to shrink significantly — as has already happened, for example, in the Black Sea basin…

Freight Market Trends: What to Expect in the Coming Season?

Market overview for the 2nd week of September 2023

Freight rates in the Azov–Black Sea region have reached their peak (coaster segment). Some charterers are refusing to carry wheat, grains, and pulses. Sales are slowing down amid increased business activity: spot shipments are becoming fewer, and trading exporters are shifting to tender shipments…

Should We Expect a Seasonal Increase in Freight Rates?

Market overview for the 1st week of September 2023

Major Russian traders are still waiting for the resumption of the Black Sea grain deal. Export duties prevent them from entering the commodity exchange market with competitive offers. At the moment, there is no sign of improvement in the situation…

Freight Market Review for August 2023

Trends and Forecasts for the Upcoming Season

Freight rates for fertilizers, steel, coal, grain, and oilseeds on deep-sea routes have not yet shown the growth expected by many. Traders are still forced to lower prices to secure their deals. As a result, freight rates are declining. We hope for an improvement in September…

Agricultural Trade Between Russia and BRICS Countries Increases by 50%

Konstantin Grinevich, Managing Partner of Glogos Project, comments on the current situation:

“Over the past six months, exports of large volumes of soybeans, vegetable oils, and frozen products have grown significantly. In light of recent events, we can also expect an increase in grain exports to South Africa and Brazil. We will continue to monitor developments, as Argentina, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE have declared their interest in joining BRICS…”

Changes on the Horizon: How the Special Military Operation and Sanctions Have Transformed Project Cargo Logistics in the Caspian Region and Russia

Konstantin Grinevich, Founder of the international company Glogos LLC, provides an in-depth look at current trends and offers his solutions.

The well-known events of 2022 led to the emergence of a number of noticeable trends in the project logistics market of Russia and neighboring countries:

1. Withdrawal of foreign EPC contractors and restructuring of domestic contractors’ work. The result — rising project costs and more complex logistics for implementation.
