Freight Market Review - Week 9, 2026

The freight market in the Azov–Black Sea region is returning to a downward trend. For wheat parcels of approximately 3,000 mt from Azov to Marmara Sea ports, rates are assessed at 48–49 USD/MT, reflecting increased availability of open tonnage for March laycan dates.

Handysize (~30,000 DWT) shows mixed dynamics depending on destination. Improved weather conditions in the Sea of Azov have increased vessel availability, putting pressure on freight rates amid stable demand for Russian grain.

Coaster (~5,000 DWT) remains firm on key routes. In the Baltic region, the market continues to be constrained by severe ice conditions, supporting freight levels at steady values due to limited vessel supply.

Key Market Observations

  • Tonnage availability: Improved weather conditions in the Sea of Azov have increased vessel supply for March laycan windows.
  • Demand: Demand for Russian grain remains stable; interest in niche crops (peas, chickpeas) is rising among Eastern Mediterranean buyers.
  • Export duties: Export duties remain at zero for the seventh consecutive week, supporting regional trading activity.
  • Baltic: Ice conditions in the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Riga are leading to cargo postponements into late March and April.
Weekly conclusion: Freight rates in the Azov–Black Sea region are softening amid increased tonnage availability, while in the Baltic region restricted vessel supply continues to support stable freight levels.
